My wife just finished this book and loved it.  That’s pretty much our highest recommendation.  For fans of updated classic tales, like Marion Zimmer Bradley’s "Mists of Avalon.”

NOTE: This is the “Enhanced Version” with extra audio/video goodies for Kindle.

NOTE #2: 125 5-Star customer reviews and the good word of my wife. What are you waiting for?

From Amazon’s page…

Enter the world of Homer's ancient Greece with the enhanced e-book edition of The Song of Achilles. This edition lets you further engage with this compelling story through video interviews with Madeline Miller and Gregory Maguire, bestselling author of the Wicked series, clips from the audio book at the start of each chapter, an illustrated map, and a pop-up gallery featuring over 40 images and descriptions of the characters, armor, and ships found in the book.
The legend begins...
Greece in the age of heroes. Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the kingdom of Phthia to be raised in the shadow of King Peleus and his golden son, Achilles. "The best of all the Greeks"—strong, beautiful, and the child of a goddess—Achilles is everything the shamed Patroclus is not. Yet despite their differences, the boys become steadfast companions. Their bond deepens as they grow into young men and become skilled in the arts of war and medicine—much to the displeasure and the fury of Achilles' mother, Thetis, a cruel sea goddess with a hatred of mortals.
When word comes that Helen of Sparta has been kidnapped, the men of Greece, bound by blood and oath, must lay siege to Troy in her name. Seduced by the promise of a glorious destiny, Achilles joins their cause, and torn between love and fear for his friend, Patroclus follows. Little do they know that the Fates will test them both as never before and demand a terrible sacrifice.
Built on the groundwork of the Iliad, Madeline Miller's page-turning, profoundly moving, and blisteringly paced retelling of the epic Trojan War marks the launch of a dazzling career.

A WORLD OF TROUBLE - Plus 3 Good Questions w/Jake Needham

Take a journey of smart, page-turning intrigue...

"Jake Needham is Michael Connelly with steamed rice.”
 - THE BANGKOK POST

Jack Shepherd was sick of Washington politics, sick of corporate law, and even a little sick of himself. So he hit the road looking for a new start, made a couple of wrong turns, and somehow wound up in Hong Kong. Now he needs a job, and being General Chalerm Kitnarock's lawyer is a job, so he takes it.

Shepherd could certainly have done a lot worse for himself. Charlie Kitnarok is the world's ninety-eighth richest man. But he's also a former prime minister of Thailand now living in exile in Dubai. When he's not making money, he's plotting his return to political power.

For Shepherd, that could be a real problem. Thailand already has a prime minister, and she's a woman with whom Shepherd once had a brief relationship. It will get particularly messy if, as Shepherd suspects, Charlie is smuggling arms to his supporters and intends to use the Thai army to seize control of the country. Can Shepherd keep his two friends from destroying each other and prevent Thailand from sliding into chaos?

Thailand is hurtling closer and closer to a bloody civil war. And as unlikely as it may sound, Jack Shepherd is probably the only person on earth who can stop it.

3 GOOD QUESTIONS W/ JAKE NEEDHAM

NFE:  What books kept you up all night reading?

JAKE NEEDHAM: As a rule, I don't stay up all night reading, but I just finished an advance copy of Lee Child's new Jack Reacher novel, A WANTED MAN, and it came about as close to keeping up as any book has in a long time. I don't know of any other author who has the feel for keeping a series character fresh and engaging that Lee Child has. And he's done it essentially by violating the rule that most people will tell you is fundamental to developing a strong series: allow your character to grow and change. Jack Reacher doesn't grow. He doesn't change. He's always the same guy and he ends up in a series of adventures that are remarkably similar book after book. And yet he never gets old and you never get bored with him. Damn that Lee Child. How come he's so good?

NFE:  Would this book keep you up all night reading if you hadn't written it? Why?

JAKE NEEDHAM: I know a lot of my reviews call my books 'page turners,' or something along those lines, but I've never really looked at them that way. I write the same kind of books I generally chose as a reader: novels which take you away to a place you would never otherwise be, and then lead you on a journey through that place that expands the sum total of your own experiences and understandings. So I don't stay up all night reading anybody's books, certainly not my own. Here's my advice. Get some sleep. Come back to see me tomorrow. We'll have more fun on our trip if we're both rested.

NFE: Give us a link to your website or blog so we can find out more about you.

OCCULTATION - by Laird Barron

Laird Barron’s literary horror collection is burning up the charts!

but hurry... the price may not last.

(UPDATE - oops, times up!  Price is back to $7.19.  U Snooze u lose, I guess.)

Laird Barron has emerged as one of the strongest voices in modern horror and dark fantasy fiction, building on the eldritch tradition pioneered by writers such as H. P. Lovecraft, Peter Straub, and Thomas Ligotti. His stories have garnered critical acclaim and been reprinted in numerous year's best anthologies and nominated for multiple awards, including the Crawford, International Horror Guild, Shirley Jackson, Theodore Sturgeon, and World Fantasy Awards. His debut collection, The Imago Sequence and Other Stories, was the inaugural winner of the Shirley Jackson Award.

He returns with his second collection, Occultation. Pitting ordinary men and women against a carnivorous, chaotic cosmos, Occultation's eight tales of terror (two never before published) include the Theodore Sturgeon and Shirley Jackson Award-nominated story "The Forest" and Shirley Jackson Award nominee "The Lagerstatte." Featuring an introduction by Michael Shea, Occultation brings more of the spine-chillingly sublime cosmic horror Laird Barron's fans have come to expect.

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. Writing with a poet's eye for detail and a folklorist's understanding of mythos, Barron lives up to his reputation for elegant, subtle, and nightmare-inducing tales with a Lovecraftian edge in his second short story collection (after 2007's The Imago Sequence and Other Stories), which includes six reprints and three original stories. In The Lagerstätte, a woman who cannot come to terms with her husband's loss clings to an occult artifact said to reunite lovers whom death has separated. A guerrilla art exhibit turns murderous in the taut and bloody Strappado. A mysterious guidebook leads four men on a terrifying camping trip in Mysterium Tremendum. Heartbreaking, hilarious, sophisticated, and gory, these stories will thrill, trouble, and haunt Barron's fans and have newcomers scrambling to search for his other work. (June)

THE LAST POLICEMAN by Ben H. Winters

This one just sounds really cool...

(Works for us!)

What’s the point in solving murders if we’re all going to die soon, anyway?

Detective Hank Palace has faced this question ever since asteroid 2011GV1 hovered into view. There’s no chance left. No hope. Just six precious months until impact.

The Last Policeman presents a fascinating portrait of a pre-apocalyptic United States. The economy spirals downward while crops rot in the fields. Churches and synagogues are packed. People all over the world are walking off the job—but not Hank Palace. He’s investigating a death by hanging in a city that sees a dozen suicides every week—except this one feels suspicious, and Palace is the only cop who cares.

The first in a trilogy, The Last Policeman offers a mystery set on the brink of an apocalypse. As Palace’s investigation plays out under the shadow of 2011GV1, we’re confronted by hard questions way beyond “whodunit.” What basis does civilization rest upon? What is life worth? What would any of us do, what would we really do, if our days were numbered?

Amazon Best Books of the Month, July 2012: It’s not often you hear a book described as a pre-apocalyptic police procedural. But in the hands of Ben Winters (Sense and Sensibility and Seamonsters), the mash-up of murder mystery and gloomy end-of-world melodrama works perfectly. Detective Hank Palace knows the world will likely be destroyed in six months by the meteor headed toward earth like a bullet. But unlike those who are giving up, quitting jobs, doing drugs, running away, or killing themselves, Palace has a job to do. He’s got a murder to solve. So he keeps plugging away, unwilling to let the looming apocalypse distract him from finding the killer. Palace is an appealingly off-kilter character, more goofball than hard-boiled. So it’s a very good thing that this is the first in a planned trilogy. --Neal Thompson

3 GOOD QUESTIONS with FAYTH DEVLIN

NFE:  What book(s) kept you up all night reading?

FAYTH DEVLIN: I'm relatively young, 30 to be exact. About 7 years ago I discovered Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake series (which was well underway with several books already published). This was my reading awakening. I'd never read anything before that blended paranormal, horror and romance. The first 9 books in the AB series are hands down my favorite novels and I think had a huge impact on the fiction I wanted to write. I lived, ate, didn't sleep, and functioned solely on those books.

NFE: Would BLOOD LUST RISING keep you up all night reading if you hadn’t written it?  Why?

FAYTH: I think it would keep me up all night. Reason? The book is action driven, so each scene feeds the next. I've heard from several readers that they devoured it in one sitting because they simply put it down.

NFE: Give us a link to your website or blog so we can find out more about you!

FAYTH:  Readers can find out more about me and my Vampire Queen Trilogy on my website, http://www.faythdevlin.com. For those who'd like a bit more personal contact, I welcome followers on twitter, @faythdevlin, and on FB, http://www.facebook.com/pages/Fayth-Devlin/303771279706902.

I, JUDAS the 5th Gospel - Plus 3 Good Questions with BOB MAYER

NEW RELEASE!

Techno-Thriller power house Bob Mayer returns with his most provocative dose of adrenaline to date!

Available Now!

What if Judas is still alive, hidden away in the jungles of the Amazon, waiting for the Second Coming?

As a massive object appears in space heading directly toward Earth, the Brotherhood heralds it as Wormwood, one of the signs of the Rapture and it’s just three days away. They have been preparing to implement the Great Commission as designated by Jesus—where everyone on the planet must hear the word of God before the end in order to be saved. They will use advanced technology to send that message directly into the minds of every human on the planet. The question is: will the message kill everyone who gets it or save them?
Believing him to be the anti-Christ, they also send a team of assassins up the Amazon to find the Great Betrayer and kill him before Armageddon.

Opposing the Brotherhood is the Triumvirate of the Illuminati. They believe they must stop the Great Commission and the assassination team. At the same time they rush to gather nuclear weapons and launch missiles into space to divert the Intruder, as they call the object, believing it to be a natural phenomenon over which technology will prevail.

Three survivors do finally make it to Judas, and he tells them a story, the true story of what happened over two millennia ago. And what is approaching.

As the object nears Earth, both sides become locked in a world-wide battle for the future of the human race, as Judas prepares in the jungle for the Second Coming, the fulfillment of his Fifth Gospel.

Which is not at all what anyone expects.
Praise for Bob Mayer’s science thrillers: “A crackling science thriller in the vein of Crichton that mixes action with science fiction.” Kirkus.
“The best combination of science fiction and technothriller this year.” Publishers Weekly.
“Spellbinding! Call it technothriller, call it science fiction, call it just terrific storytelling.” #1 NY Times Bestseller Terry Brooks

BOB MAYER:  The Stand by Stephen King.  It was such a big story.  The same with Lonesome Dove.  An epic.  Read the opening chapter and you feel like you know this whole cast of characters intimately.  It's amazing how when they cast the mini-series it was dead on.
I do remember reading this weird little book from the library as a kid called The Hobbit.  I was so thrilled when I returned it and saw there were three more books by the same author, some guy named Tolkein.  To me, that's the key to a great book-- one where you keep checking to make sure there's more to it, because you don't want it to end.
NFE: Would I, Judas keep you up all night reading if you hadn’t written it?  Why?
BOB MAYER:  I'd want to know what the Fifth Gospel written by Judas contained.  I'd want to know which side prevails, if either, between those with faith and those who believe in the power of science to conquer all.
NFE: How about some links to find you on the Web?
BOB MAYER:  Absolutely.  Love to hear from you.
